My sister and I were watching "Prince of Egypt" (yes, great movie) when we thought to ourselves 'Gee, wouldn't it be fun if Sokka somehow ended up being taken in by Ursa and raised as Zuko and Azula's brother?'
We were speculating about ways this could work (I've yet to find one I like, so if anyone has suggestions as to HOW a baby Sokka could end up in the Fire Nation, let me know) and I decided that *if* I were to ever tell that story, I'd want to do it in comic form, and this idea for a cover came into my head.
I may not ever do the comic to go with it, but I wanted so badly to do the cover that I ended up doing this much. I *REALLY* like how it came out, in the end. It was lots of fun.
So, there you have it, Prince Sokka of the Fire Nation, with his two siblings (Season 1 Zuko is a PAIN to draw after all this time) behind him like a cover would .
Okay, how baby!Sokka would end up in the Fire Nation...
How 'bout...instead of being killed in a Fire Nation raid when Sokka was a kid, what if the firebenders came earlier and instead taken their mother captive?
....No wait...then Katara would never exist.....Never mind. (Darn Katara. XD)
If you don't ever do a comic for it, could you at least write it? Please?

Doesn't expecting the unexpected make the unexpected expected?
See, Katara is the one that keeps screwing me up. I'm thinking about changing that to the raid earlier too. And maybe Iroh is leading it. And she's dying and asks Iroh to take care of her baby (who is about 18 months, giving Katara time to be an infant and thus exist). Iroh is so moved that she cares about her child enough to give him a chance at life, even in the hands of the enemy, that he decides to take him home.
It's a bit of a stretch, but maybe...
Glad you're so interested. And if I do it (which depends mostly on finding a way I like to get Sokka TO the Fire Nation) then I'll do it as a comic. It seems to NEED to be visualized.

Hm...sounds good, but would she really hand her baby over to the commanding officer of the people destroying her village and killing [nearly] everyone?
If you're sure. You, like me, have a record of starting comics and never finishing them.

It's an interesting concept for an AU if you can get it to work. But I'll say right now that the thing I never liked about the Moses scenario is the implication that he was more compassionate and egalitarian not because of his choices, but because of his ethnicity. Which is a concept that Avatar steadfastly denies. Even if you take at face value the idea that Zuko's moral confusion stems from his heritage, the question "Well, what about Azula?" is so obvious that it must have been intentional--we're not meant to take it at face value.
I guess what I'm trying to say is that if you do figure out how to launch this as a premise, don't make it too similar to Prince of Egypt, or you'll be turning the series' message inside-out. Not to mention making Zuko's own personal journey redundant.
That is a very good point, and I out and out laughed when Iroh said that Zuko's dilemma was because of his hertiage. That has NOTHING to do with it, as far as I'm concerned.
Actually, I'm going for a Sokka that's a little more apathetic. He was left to his own devices often, growing up, and is used to trying to outwit Azula because it's the only thing he has going for him-- since his two siblings are fire benders and he is not. He cares very little for suffering outside of his immediate family, and it takes a long time for him to learn some compassion for others, and not to think of them as simple chess pieces. He's not a slow as Zuko can be but...
I still just need a way to GET him to the Fire Nation.

I don't think Iroh really believes this either. If ancestry were destiny, how would he explain himself? I think he was just working within Zuko's personal preconceptions about his own options. Ideally, Zuko would have let go of the idea that he had to follow in his ancestors' footsteps...but since that ultimately turned out to be a lost cause, the next best thing was to clue him in about his other ancestors.
Anyway, your projected plan for Sokka's character makes sense. He's not exactly a shining beacon of compassion even in the series. As for getting him to the Fire Nation, how about this:
Mom gets killed. 18-month-old Sokka, confused and terrified by what's happening, wanders away from the village, is presumed dead by the survivors. Iroh finds him and can't bring himself to a) kill him or b) leave him to die on the ice floes, but he knows he also can't very well take him back to the village after the attack (plus he assumes that this kid's whole family got killed, or else how would he have come to be alone in the first place?), so he takes him home and adopts him. This would mean that Sokka would grow up as Zuko and Azula's cousin, not their brother, but that has all sorts of cool ramifications in and of itself.
Hm, good point. I like thinking of it better that way. And maybe, someday, Zuko's going to grow up and realize he's his own person. I think (or hope) he's starting to.
True that. He has compassionate moments, but he's an incredibly focused boy.
Oooh, you know, I do like that idea quite a lot. It would sort of null Ozai's arguement that Iroh's line had ended, wouldn't it? (not that that worked anyway but...) I'm sort of liking where this is going. Like, a lot a lot. And being so close to Zuko's age, they could still be quite close. Hm....Yes, I may totally steal that idea .

Some people have been asking me about this stuff so I decided to gather all information in one single article on how to make your own portfolio, in a profesional and clean looking way. I hope it's useful, because these steps I myself take.
In this article I will provide you some ideas how you can build your own homestudio for considerably cheaper price than it would cost to use "official" studio gear. I will also show you few examples where I have used the gear I describe during this article.
`karemelancholia is one of the most genuine deviants you could ever met. Always active and a true deviantART cheerleader and supporter in every aspect. You can always count on her to lend a hand or get involved, and you usually will find her doing large amounts of both at any given moment. She's consistently reports on contests around dA, showcases the efforts of her fellow artists and shows her charitable side through various activities. Besides all of this, she's a truly talented artist which is why she's an obvious choice for deviousness this month. Read More
